104 TIPS TO MANAGE YOUR CREDIT AND PROTECT YOUR IDENTITY

Read the fine print before signing up for any loan or credit card. For example, realize that if you get a new credit card promoting zero percent interest on new purchases and you don’t pay off the entire balance by the due date (typically after six to 18 months), you may be charged interest on all your original purchase amounts — not just on the remaining balance — retroactive to the original purchase date. The costs could be more than if you had used a card without a zero-percent offer.

Write a letter to dispute a billing error on your credit card. You must write to the credit card issuer at the address for "billing inquiries," not the address for sending your payments.

Make it a rule to never give out your account number over the phone unless you're making the call and it is to a company you know is reputable. If someone calls you asking for your account number or PIN, politely refuse, hang up, and call them back using the phone number listed on your most recent account statement.
